Maintaining the sacred light in the Tabernacle required more than simply kindling a flame; it demanded constant and careful daily upkeep. To support this ongoing service, specific maintenance tools were crafted. Even though their function was entirely practical, these instruments were held to the exact same rigorous standard of quality as the Menorah itself. The first of these tools functioned like tongs or tweezers [רש״י, אבן עזרא הקצר]. The priests used them to grip the wicks, draw them up from the oil, and carefully position them at the mouth of the lamps. They were also necessary for removing old and burnt wicks so that fresh ones could take their place [רש״י, רלב״ג, קאסוטו].

Alongside the tongs were specific tools for managing the residue of the fire. The primary approach among commentators is that these were small, flat-bottomed scoops with an open front, designed for scraping and collecting. Every morning, the priests used them to clean out the ashes, charred wicks, and leftover oil from the previous night, clearing the way for a fresh lighting [רש״י, רשב״ם, ריב״א, ביאור שטיינזלץ, קאסוטו]. A different perspective suggests these tools were actually trays placed directly beneath the lamps to catch any dripping oil [אבן עזרא הקצר, ויש מפרשים בטור הארוך]. However, this idea is largely rejected, as catching the oil in a separate tray would make the function of the lamps themselves unclear [הטור הארוך].

Both sets of tools had to be fashioned from completely pure and refined gold, entirely free of any impurities [אבן עזרא, רלב״ג]. Because these implements were distinct pieces and not hammered from the single solid block of gold that formed the main structure, their specific material had to be clearly defined [אור החיים, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. Beyond the practical instructions, this requirement carries a deeper lesson. It reveals that even basic cleaning supplies, whose inner quality is largely unnoticed by human eyes, must still be pure and flawless when dedicated to the service of God [אברבנאל].

On a conceptual level, these maintenance tools hold a symbolic meaning. The tongs represent the careful thought and good advice through which a person actively acquires wisdom. The scoops, in turn, symbolize the human heart. Just as these vessels carry the physical fire, the heart serves as a receptacle for the intellect and the understanding of Torah [רבנו בחיי].
