Exodus 40:10Sefaria

The anointing of the altar of burnt offering marks a profound transition, elevating a material structure into a dynamic center of spiritual service. This act of preparation expresses a sense of greatness and kingship, with the specific purpose of initiating the altar and bringing it into active, practical use [בכור שור]. The sanctification process extends beyond the main body of the altar itself to include the ramp leading up to it. Consequently, anything coming into contact with the ramp is elevated and sanctified exactly as if it had touched the actual altar [תורה תמימה].

A similar principle of mindful dedication applies to the surrounding utensils. The power of these service tools to sanctify what they hold is entirely dependent on human intention. Just as the altar does not absorb and sanctify ordinary meat that is placed upon it by mistake, the vessels do not elevate their contents unless there is an explicit, conscious thought to sanctify them [תורה תמימה, פרדס יוסף].

Despite its physical location in the outer courtyard, the altar achieves the ultimate level of holiness. It is explicitly declared to be supremely holy to dispel any mistaken assumption that its outdoor placement makes it somehow less sacred than the vessels kept hidden inside the Tabernacle [קאסוטו]. To understand how an outdoor structure earns such a lofty title, commentators offer two primary explanations. The first notes that the altar receives this designation because the specific sacrifices classified as most holy are offered upon it. The second explanation focuses on the altar's unique nature. It is not merely a holy object in its own right; it possesses an active ability to transfer holiness, ensuring that whatever touches it becomes entirely sanctified [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך].
