Exodus 40:17Sefaria

The completion of the Tabernacle marks a profound historical and spiritual climax. After months of preparation, the physical structure was finally ready to house the Divine Presence among the Israelites. The exact date of this monumental event was the first month of the second year following the Exodus from Egypt. This timing reflects a unique calendar system where the years are counted directly from the liberation from Egypt, rather than the standard Jewish new year

Because the daily public sacrifices began on this day, the first of Nissan was established for generations as the time to begin collecting the annual funds for communal offerings, a collection announced a month earlier on the first of Adar [תורה תמימה]. Interestingly, this was not the first time the structure stood. Throughout the preceding seven days of inauguration, Moses repeatedly assembled and dismantled the Tabernacle. The final, permanent establishment occurred on this specific day, allowing Moses to proceed with anointing the sacred vessels and sanctifying Aaron and his sons for their service

The actual assembly of the structure is framed as an event that happened on its own. While Moses receives the credit for successfully managing the entire massive project [קאסוטו, פירושן של נשים], the primary approach among commentators is that the construction involved a profound miracle. The wooden boards of the Tabernacle were exceptionally heavy, making it impossible for a single person to lift them. In reality, the Tabernacle miraculously stood upright on its own, while Moses merely appeared to be performing the physical labor

This physical construction was accompanied by immense spiritual and cosmic significance [העמק דבר]. According to mystical traditions, the day was fraught with a hidden spiritual struggle. Forces of impurity attempted to obstruct the completion of the Tabernacle, forcing Moses to overcome them so that holiness could finally rest in the world [שפתי כהן]. Furthermore, as the physical structure was raised on earth, a parallel spiritual Tabernacle was established in heaven. In this celestial sanctuary, the souls of the righteous are symbolically offered to provide atonement for the Israelites during times of exile The successful establishment of the Tabernacle proved that the Israelites had undergone a deep spiritual rehabilitation following the sin of the Golden Calf, ultimately reaching a level of holiness even greater than what they experienced at Mount Sinai [חתם סופר].

The process of building the Tabernacle carries broad historical symbolism. Just as the world was created in seven days, the Tabernacle—viewed as a miniature universe—was constructed in stages that mirror the days of creation The seven times Moses assembled and dismantled the structure during the inauguration week correspond to the seven historical locations of the Divine sanctuary: the desert, Gilgal, Shiloh, Nov, Gibeon, and the First and Second Temples. All of these were temporary and eventually lost, paving the way for an eternal eighth Temple at the end of days [רש״ר הירש]. Until that time arrives, the very act of studying the details of the Tabernacle's construction is viewed by God as if one is actively participating in its physical building [שפתי כהן].
