Exodus 40:19Sefaria

וַיִּפְרֹ֤שׂ אֶת־הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן וַיָּ֜שֶׂם אֶת־מִכְסֵ֥ה הָאֹ֛הֶל עָלָ֖יו מִלְמָ֑עְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

The construction of the Tabernacle reaches a pivotal moment as the structure is finally roofed and sealed, a task performed entirely by Moses. Laying down the various layers of the roof required absolute precision, transforming the open walls into a completed sanctuary. The primary approach among commentators is that the initial tent covering consisted of goat-hair panels, which were spread directly over the inner cloth layers of the Tabernacle [רש״י, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, קאסוטו]. However, another perspective suggests that the inner linen panels themselves are also considered part of this tent, noting that the Tabernacle contained no plant-based materials other than this linen [תורה תמימה]. Above this foundational tent, additional coverings were placed. Rather than a single outer layer, the design consisted of two distinct layers of animal skins. The first covering was made of red ram skins, while the uppermost layer was crafted from tachash skins, providing the final seal for the structure [העמק דבר, ביאור שטיינזלץ, קאסוטו].

The physical act of spreading these massive coverings over boards that stood ten cubits high presents a practical challenge. Tradition explains that Moses was able to accomplish this because he himself was ten cubits tall [תורה תמימה]. He did not use a ladder or a chair to reach the top of the boards. Because assembling the Tabernacle was considered a sacred service, it fell under the strict requirement that all holy work must be performed with the worker's feet resting directly on the ground, without any artificial elevation or separation [פרדס יוסף].

Throughout the completion of the Tabernacle, it is repeatedly emphasized that every action was performed exactly as God had instructed, a point reiterated numerous times despite it being obvious that Moses was the one who received the commands [אור החיים, ברכת אשר]. This repetition serves several profound purposes. First, God's original instructions were brief. He relied on Moses to internalize the prophetic vision shown to him at Mount Sinai and translate it into reality, and the repetition testifies that Moses executed this vision flawlessly [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, it confirms that there was no deviation from the original design, teaching that every individual detail of the Tabernacle's construction is considered an independent Commandment [אור החיים]. Finally, this emphasis reveals that the small technical details were not merely architectural recommendations for the building's stability, but absolute requirements. Moses understood from tradition that the resting of the Divine Presence entirely depended on every single detail being executed with exact precision, exactly as God commanded [העמק דבר].
