יחזקאל, פרק כ״ג, פסוק מ״ט

Ezekiel 23:49Sefaria

וְנָתְנ֤וּ זִמַּתְכֶ֙נָה֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ן וַחֲטָאֵ֥י גִלּוּלֵיכֶ֖ן תִּשֶּׂ֑אינָה וִידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֥י אֲנִ֖י אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה׃ {פ}

A long history of spiritual and political betrayal ultimately ends with taking absolute responsibility and facing the consequences. The diplomatic alliances and idol worship of the two kingdoms, compared to shameful acts of infidelity, lead to their total destruction. This downfall serves as clear evidence of God's righteous judgment [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The final judgment involves a public declaration of guilt. Either the appointed judges [רש״י] or the gathered assembly [מצודת דוד] will pass the sentence, declaring that the harsh consequences for these shameful acts are entirely justified and fitting [רד״ק]. The primary approach among commentators is that the burden of the sin will be placed directly on the heads of the wrongdoers. While the effects of their infidelity previously harmed the broader society, the final judgment ensures that the guilt and the resulting punishment will now rest exclusively on the actual sinners [מלבי״ם].

The punishment requires the guilty to carry the physical and spiritual weight of their actions. Their idol worship is understood in terms that emphasize its disgusting and repulsive nature, comparing it to actual filth [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. The sinners will be forced to suffer under this heavy burden, carrying the full weight of the consequences for their abominable choices [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד].

The ultimate purpose of this severe outcome is the universal recognition of divine justice. When the corrupt are punished and clearly gain nothing from their crimes, all the inhabitants of the world will recognize that there is a God who actively judges the earth [אברבנאל]. It becomes undeniably clear to everyone that God is faithful to deliver an exact and just consequence to every person based entirely on their actions [מצודת דוד].
