חֲגוֹרֵ֨י אֵז֜וֹר בְּמׇתְנֵיהֶ֗ם סְרוּחֵ֤י טְבוּלִים֙ בְּרָ֣אשֵׁיהֶ֔ם מַרְאֵ֥ה שָׁלִשִׁ֖ים כֻּלָּ֑ם דְּמ֤וּת בְּנֵֽי־בָבֶל֙ כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים אֶ֖רֶץ מוֹלַדְתָּֽם׃

A striking visual of foreign aesthetics and imperial power emerges from the vivid descriptions of the Babylonian elite. Their magnificent and unique official dress captivated the Israelites, who became infatuated with this foreign style, choosing to embrace the customs of outsiders over their own ancestral traditions [רד״ק].

The distinctive appearance of these men began with the belts fastened around their waists, a signature element of their official uniforms and state dress [רש״י, מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. This manner of dressing was entirely unique to the Babylonians and stood in stark contrast to the traditional clothing worn in the Land of Israel during that era [רד״ק].

Atop their heads, they wore large, prominent coverings fashioned from fabrics that had been deeply soaked in vibrant, strong dyes [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that these were massive, colorful turbans featuring excess cloth that trailed down the wearer's back [מצודת דוד, רד״ק] or draped over both sides of the head [מלבי״ם]. Alongside this view, another tradition identifies these imposing headpieces as large war helmets [רש״י].

Dressed in such proud and elaborate attire, these men projected an image of absolute authority. They carried the unmistakable look of mighty warriors, high-ranking commanders, and nobility [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Anyone wearing this uniform was instantly recognized as a powerful ruler, radiating pride in his rank and appearance [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

Ultimately, this imposing aesthetic was the authentic, traditional look of the Chaldeans who governed Babylon, rooted deeply in the customs of their homeland. Yet, despite it being a completely alien culture, the Israelites allowed themselves to be seduced by this striking outward display, admiring and imitating the foreign empire rather than remaining faithful to their own unique identity [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ].
