Ezekiel 23:37Sefaria

A profound spiritual collapse occurs when a nation abandons its moral foundation, leading to a tragic blend of betrayal, violence, and unthinkable cruelty. The prophet levels a severe accusation against the people, charging them with a horrific combination of the worst possible offenses: adultery, murder, and idolatry, all culminating in the nightmare of child sacrifice.

The primary approach among commentators is to view the initial accusations as two distinct, literal crimes. The people engaged in actual adultery with their neighbors' spouses, while also committing literal murder by staining their hands with innocent blood However, another perspective connects these two actions into a single offense. In this view, the bloodshed was a direct result of the adultery itself, representing the destruction of life through wasted seed, a sin for which they never repented [רש"י].

The concept of adultery is then expanded to describe their spiritual betrayal. Just as an unfaithful wife betrays her husband for strangers, the people betrayed God, who was meant to be their husband, by abandoning Him to worship idols These physical acts of adultery were not merely private sins, but were actually performed as an integral part of the idolatrous rituals themselves [רש"י].

The tragedy reaches its peak with the horrific practice of child sacrifice. The people took their own children and passed them through the fire as an offering to their idols, allowing the flames to consume the victims The commentators point out a chilling absurdity in this act. These children were originally brought into the covenant of circumcision and designated to serve God [רד"ק]. Even worse, when the idolatrous priests demanded a human sacrifice, the parents did not choose just any child. They deliberately selected the very sons who had been dedicated to Heaven, the ones sent to school and singled out for Torah study, and slaughtered them in the fire for their false gods
