Because of their involvement in idolatry, certain priests lose their privilege to serve God in a holy capacity, forced to face the harsh reality of their actions. The primary approach among commentators is that they are entirely stripped of their core duties at the altar. This restriction is comprehensive. Rather than merely being barred from the most sacred areas, such as the Holy of Holies, they are blocked from participating even in the lesser, everyday holy services [מצודת דוד].

Along with the loss of their duties, these priests must endure the heavy burden of their disgrace. Their punishment is not just a physical demotion but a profound psychological ordeal. They remain present within the Temple, yet they are completely disqualified from taking part in the service. Standing in the holy space, unable to perform the sacred tasks they once held, creates a deep and constant sense of shame. This agonizing daily reality serves as the true punishment for their past wrongdoings [מלבי״ם].
