כֹּה־אָמַר֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִה֒ כׇּל־בֶּן־נֵכָ֗ר עֶ֤רֶל לֵב֙ וְעֶ֣רֶל בָּשָׂ֔ר לֹ֥א יָב֖וֹא אֶל־מִקְדָּשִׁ֑י לְכׇ֨ל־בֶּן־נֵכָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֕ר בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Entering the future Temple requires more than just a physical presence; it demands a profound alignment of both body and spirit. Looking ahead to the future construction of the Temple, the prophecy establishes clear boundaries for who may enter, fundamentally redefining what it means to be an outsider [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that the restriction does not focus on gentiles from other nations, since their exclusion from the Temple is already understood and requires no special warning. Rather, the limitation targets an Israelite who lives among the people but has become alienated and distant from God through actions like idol worship.

This disqualification takes two distinct forms. The first is a spiritual barrier, describing a person whose heart is sealed and blocked from knowing God. The second is a physical barrier, referring to someone who is not circumcised. This physical restriction applies even if the lack of circumcision stems from a completely justified and objective reason, such as a family history of medical complications where brothers died following the procedure [מצודת דוד].

The absolute ban on entering the Temple applies specifically to the general population of Israelites who have become estranged. However, priests and Levites who fall into this same category of alienation face a different consequence. Rather than being completely exiled from the Temple grounds, they bear the weight of their sins through a demotion in their duties. They lose the right to approach and perform the sacred service itself. Instead, they are reassigned to serve as assistants to the gatekeepers and are limited to performing basic tasks for the people bringing offerings. These tasks include actions permitted to non-priests, such as slaughtering, flaying, and preparing the sacrifices [מלבי״ם].
