Ezekiel 44:10Sefaria

Spiritual leadership carries a heavy burden of accountability, especially during periods of national crisis. When a nation sinks into idolatry, the leaders who fail to guide them or who join in their failures face lasting consequences, fundamentally redefining their future status.

The primary approach among commentators is that the individuals facing these consequences are not regular Levites, but rather priests from the tribe of Levi During the time when the Israelites wandered away from God to follow idols, much like a person straying from a straight and safe path, these priests also distanced themselves from Him [מצודת ציון]. This distancing is understood in different ways. Some explain that these priests abandoned their faith and actively engaged in idol worship before eventually repenting [רש״י]. Others suggest the distancing was not necessarily a physical departure from the Temple, but a deep spiritual and practical disconnect reflected in their mindset [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Rather than simply resuming their original status, when the time comes for these servants to return to the holy place, they must face the reality of their past choices The commentators agree that they are required to bear the weight of their actions through a professional demotion. Because they shared in the sins of the people, they are permanently barred from returning to their former sacred duties. They will no longer be permitted to approach the altar or offer sacrifices. Instead, they are reassigned to secondary roles within the Temple, tasked only with guarding, policing, and overseeing the gates [רש״י].
