יחזקאל, פרק מ״ד, פסוק ט״ז

Ezekiel 44:16Sefaria

The priests from the line of Zadok are granted a unique and exclusive status within the Temple, allowing them to enter the inner sanctuary and serve directly before God. Central to this elevated service is their approach to the holy table. The primary approach among commentators is that this action refers to arranging the Showbread upon the table located inside the Sanctuary. However, there are other ways to understand this sacred duty. Some view the table as a representation of the altar itself [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From another perspective, drawing near to the table symbolizes the privilege of partaking in the holy sacrifices, a right strictly reserved for those who actively participate in the divine service [מלבי״ם].

Beyond its literal function, the specific focus on the table holds a deep symbolic vision for the future [אהבת יהונתן]. In the physical layout of the Temple, the table was positioned on the northern side, a direction traditionally associated with material abundance and wealth. Throughout history, an excess of wealth and gold frequently led to moral failure and the forgetting of God, as seen in the tragedy of the Golden Calf. Yet, in the future era, the human drive toward evil will be completely removed. The priests will be able to approach the table and receive its immense material blessings without any risk of corruption.

Instead of falling into sin, they will remain completely devoted to their responsibilities. This steadfast loyalty involves carefully maintaining all the various duties and services required in the Temple [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, this responsibility is not merely a standard administrative task. It is a highly elevated, spiritual duty dedicated entirely to God, standing in stark contrast to the basic maintenance of the Temple grounds assigned to the other priests [מלבי״ם].
