As a new phase of the vision begins [מנחת שי], the guiding angel leads the prophet back from the inner courtyard where he had been standing [מלבי״ם], directing him toward the outer gate [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The exact location of this gate is a matter of discussion. The primary approach among commentators is that it refers to the main sanctuary hall, which is considered "outer" simply because it sits just outside the inner Holy of Holies [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, אברבנאל]. In this layout, the gate faces east toward the entrance hall rather than west toward the Holy of Holies [מצודת דוד]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that this is the gate of the outer courtyard [מלבי״ם]. Regardless of the precise architectural definition, this eastern-facing gate [ביאור שטיינזלץ] is the very same entrance the prophet used at the start of his vision [מלבי״ם].

Upon returning to this location, a surprising detail emerges: the gate is now firmly locked, preventing the prophet from exiting through it [מלבי״ם]. According to the tradition of the sages, this closure specifically refers to the southern wicket—one of two smaller doors built into the larger gate [מצודת דוד]. Finding the entrance sealed is unexpected because it had previously been wide open when the glory of God first entered the building [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

This sudden closure is not a random architectural detail but carries a profound symbolic message about the contrast between the historical Temples and the future one. During the periods of the First and Second Temples, the eastern gate remained open. This open door served as a constant, lingering warning that the Divine Presence could potentially leave its place and depart from the nation. However, in the eternal Temple of the future, God shows the prophet the gate open just long enough for His glory to enter before it is immediately shut. This permanent seal guarantees that the Divine Presence will never depart again, ensuring that God will dwell among the people of Israel forever [אברבנאל].
