Ezekiel 44:28Sefaria

The tribe of priests stands apart from the rest of the nation regarding land ownership. Their central calling is a life completely dedicated to the Temple service and the spiritual realm. Because of this sacred duty, their material livelihood does not stem from agriculture or inherited estates, but flows directly from their spiritual role.

The primary approach among commentators is that the very status of the priesthood and the service of God constitute the true inheritance of the priests. Complementing this spiritual concept is a practical reality: their inheritance takes the physical form of priestly gifts. Instead of working the soil, the priests receive the edible portions of various sacrifices, such as the meal, sin, and guilt offerings, alongside other holy contributions like the first fruits and the dough offering God Himself is considered their inheritance, emphasizing that the remaining portions of the sacrifices offered to Him serve as their exclusive property [מצודת דוד].

To ensure this absolute dedication, the priests are not given traditional land holdings, which would typically include fields and vineyards This restriction guarantees that they will not engage in agricultural labor, allowing them to remain entirely focused on the Temple service without the distraction of material burdens. The repeated divine promise that God is their holding reinforces that these sacred portions are the ultimate substitute for physical land [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, this arrangement creates a cycle of blessing for the entire nation. By providing these gifts to the priests, every Israelite brings a blessing from God directly into their own home

Looking toward the future, the status of the priests remains unique. While the rest of the Levites may eventually receive a certain portion of land, the priests will continue to have no land holdings at all [מלבי״ם]. One explanation ties this to the ancient cities of refuge. Historically, the only inheritance given to the tribe of Levi consisted of forty-two cities of refuge. In the future, a time of ultimate peace when people will no longer harm one another, these cities will become obsolete, leaving them with no physical estate. Another perspective connects this to the aftermath of the sin of the Golden Calf. Because the tribe of Levi did not participate in that sin, they were granted a crown of royalty, which required a minimal land holding, as there is no king without land. However, in the future, when God Himself will be recognized as King over all the earth, the priests will no longer need any royal estate of their own [אהבת יהונתן].
