וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ כּ֔וֹרֶשׁ הוֹצִ֖יא אֶת־כְּלֵ֣י בֵית־יְהֹוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הוֹצִ֤יא נְבֽוּכַדְנֶצַּר֙ מִיר֣וּשָׁלַ֔͏ִם וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖ם בְּבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהָֽיו׃

The return of the Israelites to their homeland was accompanied by the restoration of the holy vessels looted decades earlier. The narrative traces the long journey of these sacred objects, from the moment of their capture to their eventual release. The primary approach among commentators is that Nebuchadnezzar was the one who originally took the vessels from Jerusalem and placed them in his own house of worship. Eventually, these items passed from the Babylonian kings into the hands of King Cyrus. Cyrus then brought the vessels out from the treasuries where they had been stored [שטיינזלץ], specifically removing them from the treasury of the pagan temple [מצודת דוד].

The fact that these holy objects had been kept in a place of idol worship created a serious complication. They could not be taken directly from a pagan shrine and returned to service in the Holy Temple. Because of this, the physical removal of the items by Cyrus served as a necessary step to cancel their status as objects of idolatry. By taking the vessels out of the idol's domain and transferring them into the royal treasury under the control of his own treasurer, Cyrus effectively removed their impurity. Once they were firmly in the king's secular possession, it became possible to hand them over to Sheshbazzar, making them fully purified and ready once again for holy use [מלבי״ם].
