Genesis 16:4Sefaria

A physical milestone within Abraham's household quickly triggers a profound psychological and social upheaval. Hagar becomes pregnant immediately after her first union with Abraham. This immediate conception is understood to be a miraculous and highly unusual occurrence, as such an instant result is generally uncommon However, this sudden miracle leads directly to a painful consequence: Hagar begins to view Sarai with contempt, stripping her mistress of her previous value and dignity

The sudden disrespect Hagar shows toward Sarai stems from a mix of spiritual pride and social ambition. On a spiritual level, Hagar interprets her quick pregnancy as proof of her own moral superiority. She begins to see Sarai as a hypocrite whose outward display of righteousness does not match her true inner character. Hagar reasons that if Sarai were genuinely worthy, Abraham's immense merit would have worked on her behalf, preventing her from remaining barren for so many years. To Hagar, her own instant success is clear evidence that Sarai possesses hidden spiritual flaws At the same time, Hagar's attitude is fueled by the social dynamics of the ancient world. A maidservant who provided a child to a master could easily rise to the status of a primary wife. Believing that Abraham's legacy will now continue exclusively through her, Hagar feels she is no longer subordinate to Sarai. Empowered by this elevated self-image, she simply stops obeying her mistress

Deeply insulted by Hagar's open disrespect, Sarai directs her frustration at Abraham. She confronts him for remaining silent and failing to pray to God for them to have a child together, accusing him of only looking out for his own needs [צאינה וראינה]. The tension in the household reaches a tragic peak as a result of this conflict. Sarai's harsh reaction and intense strictness toward Hagar generate an evil eye, which ultimately causes Hagar to miscarry her first child. Only after this loss does Hagar become pregnant once again
