A nation's military strength often reflects its spiritual standing. During the reign of Jehoshaphat, the Kingdom of Judah experienced an era of massive expansion, a direct result of the people following God's ways.
The scale of the military clearly shows this blessing. During the time of Abijah, the army had four hundred thousand fighters. Under Jehoshaphat, that number grew to over a million mighty warriors. This massive figure did not even include the separate forces stationed to guard the fortified cities [רלב״ג].
Such a vast military required careful organization. The overall count included both the regular soldiers and the network of appointed officers who managed them [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To maintain order, the army was structured according to ancestral families. Within the tribe of Judah, the forces were divided among three primary family lines: Perez, Zerah, and Shelah. Three distinct leaders were appointed to guide these family divisions [מלבי״ם]. The troops were further organized into groups, each led by a commander responsible for a unit of one thousand warriors [מצודת דוד]. Overseeing this entire military structure was Adnah, who served as the supreme commander of all the forces [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
