Restoring the Temple demanded a massive effort to reverse nearly sixty years of severe neglect and intentional destruction caused by the previous kings of Judah, Manasseh and Amon [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To repair this extensive damage, funds were distributed to skilled professionals to purchase the necessary raw materials. The labor was divided between two main groups of workers. The first group consisted of skilled artisans who worked with hard materials [ביאור שטיינזלץ], specifically tasked with cutting and shaping the wood [מצודת דוד]. The second group comprised the builders, who took on the practical work of constructing the walls [מצודת דוד].

With the allocated funds, the workers purchased perfectly straight, hewn stones [מצודת דוד] alongside timber that served two critical structural purposes. First, the wood was used to create beams and pegs designed to connect and lock the various parts of the structure together into one solid, stable unit. Second, the timber provided new roofing to cover the ceilings of the buildings [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Integrating these fresh stones and wooden roofs was absolutely necessary to reinforce and stabilize the Temple complex, which had been deliberately ruined by the former kings [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
