II Chronicles 34:3Sefaria

A young leader's spiritual awakening often requires overcoming the heavy burden of a dark family legacy. King Josiah's journey toward God unfolded in distinct, deliberate stages, representing a remarkable personal choice. At a time when he was expected to simply follow the established norms, he consciously rejected the idolatrous paths of his grandfather Manasseh and his father Amon, choosing instead to seek out God on his own initiative. The initial turning point occurred during the eighth year of his reign. Commentators debate his exact age at this crucial moment. Some explain that this refers to his very first year in power, when he was merely eight years old Others suggest it was literally the eighth year of his rule, making him a young man of sixteen

Regardless of his exact age, his youth makes his early actions extraordinary. Unlike a mature adult who is expected to act with settled judgment, a young person typically lacks such maturity and tends to instinctively imitate the behavior of his parents Josiah's early devotion to God was therefore a profound exception to human nature.

The next phase of his spiritual campaign began in the twelfth year of his reign. By this time, he was around twenty years old, and his authority over the kingdom was firmly established [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. With this newfound stability, he started to actively clean and purify the land [מצודת ציון], purging it of the very idolatry that his own fathers had reintroduced [רש״י].

This effort was not a sudden, singular event, but rather a gradual, ongoing process. Recognizing this helps resolve an apparent historical contradiction. The Book of Kings records that the eradication of idols took place in the eighteenth year of Josiah's reign, following the discovery of a Torah scroll. However, the historical account here reveals that the purification actually began six years earlier. The Book of Kings simply chose to summarize the entire campaign by focusing on its absolute completion, whereas the Book of Chronicles details the process from its very first, gradual steps [רד ק ומלבי״ם].
