The meeting between Shaphan the scribe and the king unfolds carefully and deliberately. Rather than rushing to share the dramatic news of a discovered book, Shaphan delivers his report in stages. First, he addresses his original mission, giving the king a full update on the tasks he was initially sent to do. Only after completing this standard report does he shift his focus to deliver the special message from Hilkiah the priest [רש״י].
The manner in which the book is presented to the king is highly specific. Hilkiah did not simply hand over a closed scroll. Instead, he gave Shaphan the lost book already unrolled and intentionally opened to a particular section. Consequently, as Shaphan reads the text aloud to the king, he does not search for a place to begin. He reads directly from the exact page that was open when the book was handed to him [מצודת דוד].
