During the renovations of the Temple, a momentous discovery took place. For many years, the Temple and its treasuries had been entirely neglected and left unexamined [שטיינזלץ]. As the accumulated funds were finally being brought out from the treasuries to pay for the construction work, Hilkiah the priest uncovered a rare artifact [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
There are different understandings regarding the exact nature of this newly found scroll of God's law. The primary approach among commentators is that this was the actual, original Torah scroll written by the hands of Moses. This famous and precious scroll had been deliberately hidden and lost during the reigns of Manasseh and his son Amon. Despite previous searches, its hiding spot remained unknown until the moment it was rediscovered among the Temple's treasures [מלבי״ם]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that the discovery does not necessarily refer to the physical scroll penned by Moses. Instead, it refers to the specific content of the text, identifying the find as the Book of Deuteronomy [רש״י].
