The prophet directs his response specifically to the captain. This personal address occurs because the soldiers remained standing at a distance, leaving their leader to approach the prophet alone [מלבי״ם].

Elijah replies by turning the officer's own words against him. He challenges the captain, stating that if he is indeed a man of God as the captain just acknowledged [ביאור שטיינזלץ], it is unthinkable that he should be treated with such blatant disrespect. As a direct consequence of this arrogance, the judgment is sealed that fire will descend from the sky [מלבי״ם]. The descending fire targets both the captain and the fifty men under his command. The destruction is absolute, leaving the officer and his entire unit completely consumed by the flames [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
