Struck by the harsh prophetic message delivered by his returning messengers, the king immediately seeks to uncover the identity of the mysterious figure who intercepted them on the road. His questions center on the stranger's overall manner and appearance. The primary approach among commentators is that the king's inquiry does not relate to a legal ruling, but rather to the man's physical look, clothing, and way of life.

The king is deeply puzzled by the stranger's behavior. Typically, a prophet carrying a message from God would present himself directly at the royal palace. Because this figure chose to stop the messengers on the road instead, the king wonders if he is simply an unrecognized prophet, or perhaps a poor man dressed in rags who was too ashamed to approach the grand gates of the palace. To solve this mystery, he asks for a detailed description of the man's attire and presence.

At the same time, the king harbors darker suspicions. Because the man avoided the palace, the king feels he might have failed in his duty and insulted the honor of the crown, an offense that could warrant the death penalty. According to this perspective [מלבי״ם], the king's question also carries a punitive undertone, asking what legal judgment and punishment this man truly deserves.

A notable detail of this roadside encounter is that the prophet was acting entirely alone. His student Elisha was not present with him at the time. It was the prophet's practice to occasionally leave his student behind in one location and go off to isolate himself in the mountains, seeking a quiet place to receive prophecy from God [רד״ק].
