II Kings 1:17Sefaria

וַיָּ֜מׇת כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֣ה ׀ אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֣ר אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ וַיִּמְלֹ֤ךְ יְהוֹרָם֙ תַּחְתָּ֔יו {פ}בִּשְׁנַ֣ת שְׁתַּ֔יִם לִיהוֹרָ֥ם בֶּן־יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה כִּ֛י לֹא־הָ֥יָה ל֖וֹ בֵּֽן׃ {ס}

The death of King Ahaziah marks the tragic end of his life and the exact fulfillment of Elijah's prophecy. Because he dies without a son to inherit the throne, the crown of the Kingdom of Israel passes to his brother, Jehoram the son of Ahab [מצודת דוד, רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, חומת אנך, אברבנאל]. This shift in power aligns with a complex timeline involving the neighboring Kingdom of Judah.

The timing of this transition presents a historical puzzle. Records show that Jehoram of Israel took power during the eighteenth year of the Judean King Jehoshaphat, who ruled for twenty-five years in total. However, the timeline also places this succession in the second year of the reign of Jehoshaphat's son, Jehoram of Judah. To resolve this overlap, a practical political approach suggests a shared monarchy. To prevent future conflicts and succession battles among his children, Jehoshaphat crowned his son while he was still alive. Therefore, the timeline refers to the second year of this joint rule, a co-regency that lasted for seven years [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

Other perspectives offer a spiritual reason for these overlapping dates. Earlier, Jehoshaphat had joined the wicked Ahab in the battle of Ramoth-gilead. As a consequence for helping him, Jehoshaphat deserved to die in combat. Although God spared his life when he cried out for help, a spiritual shift occurred. God delayed the physical punishment, but conceptually removed the final seven years of Jehoshaphat's reign, transferring them to his son's record from that very moment [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, רש״י, אברבנאל].

Additionally, the complex dating reflects a broader regional partnership. Following Ahab's death and the marriage alliances between the two royal families, the elder Jehoshaphat earned deep respect from Ahab's sons. This led to his active involvement in guiding the Kingdom of Israel. The overlapping years thus capture the intricate, shared leadership between the kings of Judah and Israel during this era [רלב״ג, אברבנאל].
