מלכים ב, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ד

II Kings 1:14Sefaria

הִ֠נֵּ֠ה יָ֤רְדָה אֵשׁ֙ מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַ֠תֹּ֠אכַל אֶת־שְׁנֵ֞י שָׂרֵ֧י הַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים וְאֶת־חֲמִשֵּׁיהֶ֑ם וְעַתָּ֕ה תִּיקַ֥ר נַפְשִׁ֖י בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ {ס}

A military captain approaches the prophet Elijah with a desperate plea for survival. Having witnessed the terrifying fate of his predecessors, this third commander seeks to distance himself from their actions, relying on humility and reasoned argument rather than force.

The previous commanders were punished and burned by fire because they approached the prophet with pride and evil intent [מצודת דוד]. Recognizing this, the third captain argues that the destructive fire has already served its purpose. If the goal was to instill fear and establish the prophet's authority, that message has been clearly delivered through the death of the first two groups. Therefore, there is no need to prove this power yet again at his expense [מלבי״ם].

Because he comes forward with complete submission rather than arrogance, he begs for his life to be spared [מצודת דוד]. However, his plea carries an additional layer of urgency. He is not merely asking to avoid being burned by fire from the sky; he is begging Elijah to accompany him back to the king. The captain knows that returning empty-handed will mean certain death at the hands of his own ruler for failing to capture the prophet by force. His ultimate request is for Elijah to show mercy on his life by agreeing to go with him willingly [מלבי״ם].
