II Kings 1:15Sefaria

Following previous confrontations with the king's captains, Elijah receives a direct divine command to go down to the city and face the king. He is instructed to descend the mountain alongside the captain. Physically, the captain had climbed all the way to the peak where Elijah was staying, and from there, the two of them journeyed down together to meet the king [רד״ק].

The angel's instruction not to be afraid reveals a natural sense of fear within Elijah. He was afraid to travel with the captain because he knew the journey would lead him directly to the king. Elijah had previously delivered a harsh prophecy stating that the king would die from his illness, giving him good reason to be anxious. Additionally, he may have feared the king's mother, Queen Jezebel [רד״ק].

However, a fundamental shift occurs in the prophet's situation at this moment. Until this point, Elijah had not been explicitly commanded to go to the king, making his hesitation and fear completely justified. Once he receives the clear command from the angel, he becomes an official messenger on a divine mission. Because he is carrying out a direct order from God, he is protected by Him from all harm. With this divine backing, Elijah is able to rise and walk to the king with complete confidence and without fear [מלבי״ם].
