The final moments of King Saul on the battlefield are marked by profound tragedy, compounded by the reaction of his most loyal servant. The king's death did not happen instantly. Although he threw himself upon his weapon, he survived the initial impact. His life was ultimately ended by an Amalekite youth, whom the king himself asked to deliver the final blow [רלב״ג].

Watching his master's demise, the armor-bearer was driven to take his own life. This desperate action stemmed from the deep bond and intense closeness he shared with the king. The moment he saw that his master was dead, the servant felt that his own existence no longer held any meaning or purpose [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The manner in which the servant ended his life adds another layer of grim devotion to the event. Rather than drawing his own personal weapon, he threw himself upon the very same sword used by the king, which was still protruding entirely through his master's body [חומת אנך].
