I Chronicles 23:11Sefaria

וַיְהִי־יַ֣חַת הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְזִיזָ֖ה הַשֵּׁנִ֑י וִיע֤וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָה֙ לֹא־הִרְבּ֣וּ בָנִ֔ים וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָ֔ב לִפְקֻדָּ֖ה אֶחָֽת׃ {ס}

Organizing the Levite families for service required a highly precise system of roles and shifts. Within the family of Shimei, leadership and responsibilities were clearly defined to ensure the sacred duties were carried out efficiently. Jahath served as the primary leader and established the first family household, followed by Zizah, who was also known by the name Zina [מצודת דוד].

The other two brothers, Jeush and Beriah, did not have many sons. Because their numbers were small, they could not function as independent households for the temple service. To solve this, they were merged into a single group under the guidance of one leader [מצודת דוד]. In terms of their actual work, they were treated as one combined family unit [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Together, this unified group was appointed to a specific official role, taking on responsibilities related directly to the treasury [מצודת ציון].

By combining Jeush and Beriah into one working group, the broader family of Gershon ultimately consisted of exactly nine primary households. This entire organizational structure was not a later historical development; it was firmly established and put into practice during the reign of King David [מלבי״ם].
