I Chronicles 23:22Sefaria

The passing of a family leader without male heirs often threatened both the continuation of the family line and the delicate balance of inherited duties. In the case of Eleazar, his death without sons created an immediate challenge for the lineage and the careful division of roles among the Levite families.

The solution to this crisis came from within the extended family, ensuring both the preservation of the family unit and the completion of their organizational structure. The sons of Kish stepped in to marry Eleazar's daughters. Although identified as brothers, the men were actually cousins or close relatives rather than biological siblings [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. These internal marriages were arranged to guarantee that the broader family remained firmly united [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the immediate family matters, Eleazar's lack of male heirs posed a structural problem for the Levite working divisions. Without descendants from Eleazar, the total count would seemingly drop to only twenty-two divisions. However, by cross-referencing genealogies found elsewhere, it becomes clear how this organizational gap was resolved. Other members of the Merari lineage—specifically Zaccur and Ibri, descendants of Jaaziah—were appointed as heads of their own households. This strategic appointment restored the necessary balance, completing the required twenty-four Levite divisions. Ultimately, these twenty-four groups were composed of nine divisions from the family of Gershon, nine from Kohath, and six from Merari [מלבי״ם].
