I Chronicles 23:31Sefaria

The daily operations of the Temple required a highly organized system of duties, particularly during special occasions like Sabbaths, New Moons, and festivals when public sacrifices were offered. The Levites played a central role in these events, balancing spiritual and practical responsibilities alongside their regular daily tasks.

The primary approach among commentators is that the Levites' main responsibility during these offerings was sacred song. As the public sacrifices were placed on the altar—especially the additional offerings of these special days—the Levites stood at their stations to sing, offer thanks, and praise before God.

Beyond their musical duties, the Levites provided essential physical assistance in preparing the sacrifices. They managed the Temple chambers, specifically the chamber where the lambs were kept, carefully inspecting the animals to ensure they were fit for the altar [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. On busy days with numerous sacrifices, the Levites actively helped the priests with the heavy physical labor. This included bringing the animals to the priests, preparing them, slaughtering them, flaying their skin, and cutting them into the appropriate pieces [רש״י, רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

However, this assistance had a clear legal boundary. The Levites could only perform these tasks up to the point of receiving the animal's blood; from that moment onward, the work was strictly reserved for the priests [רד״ק]. The Levites were also responsible for strict accuracy in their duties. They ensured that the exact number of sacrifices required by Torah law for each specific day was brought forward, without any additions or omissions [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Every step of this process was carefully managed to guarantee that the service was performed exactly according to established law.
