I Chronicles 23:24Sefaria

The transition from wandering in the desert to establishing a permanent home in Jerusalem marked a major shift for the Levites and their sacred service. To prepare for the building of the Temple, a new census organized the families. The heads of these families took responsibility for all the Levites counted under their leadership [מצודת דוד]. Each person was tallied individually, with his specific name carefully recorded Their daily work encompassed a wide range of Temple duties, including serving as singers, gatekeepers, and various appointed officials [מצודת דוד].

A significant change introduced by King David during this time was the starting age for service, which he set at twenty years old. This raises a natural question, as the original law required Levites to be thirty before beginning their duties. The primary approach among commentators is that the original age requirement applied exclusively to the period of wandering in the desert. During those years, the Levites were tasked with physically carrying the Tabernacle and its heavy vessels on their shoulders. This demanding labor required the full physical strength of a thirty-year-old man. However, once God granted the Israelites peace and the Temple was destined to stand permanently in Jerusalem, the need to carry heavy loads ended. Consequently, David lowered the starting age to twenty, a time when young men were fully capable of assisting the priests in the courtyards and chambers [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].

Complementing this idea, the age of twenty also marked the start of a training period. These younger Levites were integrated into the various divisions to perform lighter tasks as apprentices and helpers. Only upon reaching the age of thirty did they assume their roles as fully qualified workers. This progressive approach mirrors other preparation periods designed to gradually train the Levites for their ultimate responsibilities
