Managing the daily sacrificial service required immense responsibility from the Levites, with specific individuals assigned to tasks that demanded absolute precision. Mattithiah was entrusted with a central and highly sensitive role of this nature.

His duty centered around a specific grain offering prepared in a pan. This was the personal offering of the High Priest, prepared with oil and brought on a daily basis [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The offering consisted of a specific measure, a tenth of an ephah, which was carefully divided into two equal portions. One half was offered in the morning, and the remaining half was brought in the evening [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Because this daily offering required complex preparation that had to begin even before dawn, a dedicated and highly reliable overseer was necessary. Mattithiah held a permanent and trusted appointment to manage this exact process. His responsibility was to closely supervise the preparation, remind and prompt the workers, and ensure that the offering was completed and brought at its precise time [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
