The daily operation of the Temple required more than just the rotating shifts of priests and Levites. It demanded a permanent, highly reliable team to manage the logistical and administrative duties. A fixed arrangement was established to guarantee that no guard would ever neglect or abandon their post [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These individuals were selected specifically for their unwavering loyalty. Because they were so deeply trusted, a single person was sufficient to be placed in charge of each task [מלבי״ם].

Among this dedicated staff were four mighty gatekeepers. These men were strategically stationed at the four sides of the Temple complex [רלב״ג]. However, they were not the only guards on duty. Rather, these four served as the chief commanders, directing and overseeing the rest of the gatekeepers [רד״ק]. Together with the other Levites, they carried out their responsibilities with absolute dedication [מצודת דוד].

Because of their proven reliability, the responsibilities of these four commanders extended far beyond simply watching the entrances. They were entrusted with the management and protection of the Temple chambers and the treasuries of God [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. This heavy responsibility meant they were tasked with securing the sacred grounds around the clock, keeping watch and protecting the area even through the night [רלב״ג].
