I Chronicles 9:33Sefaria

The musical service of the Temple demanded absolute dedication, profoundly shaping the daily routines and living arrangements of its musicians. The leaders of the Levite families served as the master singers, bearing a unique responsibility that set them apart from their peers [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג].

Because of the intense demands of their role, these musicians were granted a special release or exemption [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that these singers were completely freed from all other Temple duties. While other Levites and gatekeepers managed the physical maintenance of the building and prepared necessary materials, the singers were relieved of these tasks so they could focus entirely on the art of music. Taking a different perspective, some explain that this exemption actually refers to the doors of the chambers where the singers spent their time [רלב״ג]. According to this view, the doors to their rooms were always left open and never closed.

Both interpretations stem from the same underlying reality: the singers were engaged in their craft day and night. They remained in their chambers constantly to study, practice, and perfect their musical skills. The Temple's system of vocal and instrumental music was highly complex and vast, including regular daily songs performed in public alongside unique compositions reserved for specific days and special ceremonies [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Mastering such an intricate musical system required continuous effort and a constant, round-the-clock presence [מצודת דוד].
