וּבְגִבְע֛וֹן יָשְׁב֥וּ אֲבִי־גִבְע֖וֹן (יעואל) [יְעִיאֵ֑ל] וְשֵׁ֥ם אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מַעֲכָֽה׃

Genealogies often act as historical bridges, rewinding the narrative to set the stage for major shifts in power. The historical record here returns to a family line that was already fully detailed earlier. This deliberate repetition serves to reconnect the main storyline after a long pause that outlined the divisions of priests and Levites living in Jerusalem. By returning to the lineage of King Saul, the history is organized chronologically, preparing to explain the monumental transfer of the kingship from Saul to David. From this point forward, the events of the kings of Judah unfold sequentially all the way to the time of the exile [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

While the exact reason the repetition stops at this specific point remains a subject of wonder [מלבי״ם], another perspective shifts the timeline of these events to a much later era. Rather than occurring during the early monarchy, this settlement record may belong to the days of Nehemiah and the return from exile. In this view, the people of Gibeon followed the national practice of their time, selecting a tenth of their population who volunteered to leave their hometown and help repopulate Jerusalem [רלב״ג].

At the center of this historical record is a figure known as the father of Gibeon, a title designating him as the chief officer, leader, or mayor of the city [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alongside him is his wife, Maacah, establishing the foundational family of this significant settlement.
