The genealogies of the returnees to Zion document the heads of the families who settled in Jerusalem after the exile. Leading the families from the tribe of Judah is a man named Uthai, a descendant of Perez. A careful reading of the traditional text clarifies Uthai's immediate ancestry, establishing him specifically as the son of Bani and placing him firmly within the family line of Perez, the son of Judah [מנחת שי], [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When comparing this genealogical record to a parallel account in the Book of Nehemiah, several differences emerge. First, the leader identified as Uthai appears elsewhere under the name Athaiah. Despite the variation, these records refer to the exact same person, as the two names share a very similar sound [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the names of the ancestors listed in this lineage differ completely from those recorded in the parallel account [רלב״ג]. This apparent gap exists because neither historical record attempts to list every single generation in perfect sequential order. Instead, both accounts skip over certain generations, with each record choosing to highlight different ancestors from within the very same family tree [מצודת דוד].
