At the dawn of the Second Temple era, a wave of returning exiles made their way back to settle in Jerusalem. Among these pioneers who reestablished the community in the city were members of the tribe of Benjamin [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

As the lineage of Sallu son of Meshullam is recorded, a comparison with a parallel genealogical record in the Book of Nehemiah reveals significant differences. While a specific ancestral line is detailed in this account, the record in Nehemiah traces seven generations of Meshullam's forefathers using entirely different names. Furthermore, the account in Nehemiah includes additional details, such as a specific count of 928 men, while omitting certain individuals who appear in subsequent records [מלבי״ם].

To resolve these striking differences in the ancestral names, commentators offer two primary explanations. It is possible that these forefathers were known by multiple names, with each book simply choosing to record a different one. Alternatively, the discrepancy may stem from a unique method of genealogical record-keeping found in the Book of Chronicles. This approach sometimes skips over immediate, recent generations entirely, choosing instead to link an individual directly to their much more distant ancestors [רלב״ג].
