I Kings 4:5Sefaria

וַעֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־נָתָ֖ן עַל־הַנִּצָּבִ֑ים {ס} וְזָב֧וּד בֶּן־נָתָ֛ן כֹּהֵ֖ן רֵעֶ֥ה הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ {ס}

King Solomon's royal court relied on a highly organized administration, and the sons of Nathan held particularly vital roles within this leadership. The first position belonged to Azariah, who was placed in charge of the regional governors and appointed officials The kingdom relied on twelve ministers who were responsible for supplying food and provisions for the king and his entire household. Each minister was assigned one specific month of the year to fulfill this duty Azariah served as the chief overseer of these twelve men. His responsibility was to supervise their work, ensuring that each minister delivered the required supplies exactly on time during his designated month

The second position was held by Azariah's brother, Zabud, who carried two distinct titles. The first title identifies him as a priest. There are different ways to understand this designation. Some view it literally, meaning he was born into a family of priests. Others understand the term not as a marker of family lineage, but as a title of honor, indicating that he was a highly respected individual holding an elevated rank in the government

Zabud's second title, the king's friend, highlights his deep personal connection to Solomon. He served as the king's closest companion and confidant, spending time constantly in his presence [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. This type of role was standard in royal courts, designed to provide the king with personal company, bring him joy, and offer a listening ear. Because of this profound trust, the king could safely share his deepest thoughts and hidden secrets with him Additionally, this close relationship allowed Zabud to act as a loyal advisor, bringing the king news and information that would normally never reach him through the formal channels of the regular government officials [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
