Rather than rushing to establish a royal court, Saul returns to his normal routine in his hometown of Gibeah, a city that would later become known as Gibeah of Saul [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This decision to go back home stems from his keen awareness of the public mood. Realizing that he is not yet fully accepted or desired by the entire nation, Saul deliberately avoids adopting royal etiquette and simply returns to his previous way of life [רד״ק].

Despite this quiet retreat, Saul does not journey back alone. He is accompanied by a group of God-fearing men whose hearts God has touched [רש״י, רד״ק]. God places a deep sense of reverence within these individuals, planting a genuine desire in their hearts to accept and support the new leader. It is this profound fear of Heaven that motivates them to honor the king anointed by God's command [מצודת דוד].

The righteousness of this loyal group is especially evident when viewed against the broader backdrop of the nation. Their faithful support stands in stark contrast to the worthless individuals, noted shortly afterward, who stubbornly refuse to accept Saul's authority [רד״ק].
