שמואל א, פרק י׳, פסוק כ״ב

I Samuel 10:22Sefaria

A nation eagerly awaits its newly chosen king, only to discover that he is nowhere to be found. This surprising absence highlights a sharp contrast between the public's intense desire for a leader and the chosen man's deep reluctance to accept the role. To locate him, the people turn to God, inquiring through the Urim and Thummim [מצודת דוד]. They ask whether another individual, currently missing from the gathering, has arrived [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל, מצודת דוד], or they inquire specifically if Saul himself is already present at the location [רד״ק].

God reveals that Saul has concealed himself among the equipment [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that Saul took shelter inside a designated house or specific space where the gathered crowd had stored their personal belongings. Opinions vary on the exact nature of this hiding spot. It may have been a wardrobe filled with clothing [שטיינזלץ], or perhaps an area holding agricultural tools and cattle gear located in a nearby field or building [אברבנאל].

Saul's decision to hide is driven by profound modesty and a genuine desire to flee from the heavy burden of power [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. His actions reflect a spiritual principle that leadership naturally pursues those who run away from it, and it is precisely this initial avoidance that makes Saul worthy of the crown [אברבנאל]. Yet, human nature is incredibly complex when it comes to authority. While it is difficult for a person to accept greatness, it is equally difficult to let it go. The very same man who initially hides from the throne will eventually find himself relentlessly pursuing David in a desperate attempt to keep it [אברבנאל].

Beyond the physical act of hiding, an additional midrashic approach suggests that Saul's concealment is directly tied to the Urim and Thummim themselves. Overwhelmed by humility, Saul feels entirely unworthy of becoming king. Rather than simply running away, he waits in hiding for the people to consult the Urim and Thummim, needing ultimate divine confirmation that he is truly fit for the responsibility [רש״י, רד״ק, אברבנאל].
