שמואל א, פרק י׳, פסוק ו׳

I Samuel 10:6Sefaria

Profound spiritual elevation and deep personality change are the focus of the divine promise given at this moment. Stepping out of a private, ordinary life and into the role of a prophetic leader requires a direct intervention from God, one that completely transforms a person's inner essence.

This transformation begins with the spirit of God descending upon the chosen leader. Some commentators explain this movement as the spirit passing over him [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד], while others describe it as a profound sense of inspiration where the spirit comes to rest upon him [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to a spirit of prophecy [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. However, [מלבי״ם] suggests that it is a spirit of wondrous divine bravery, meant to provide the extraordinary courage needed to save a large nation from enemy armies. Viewing this as a gradual process, [אברבנאל] explains that the initial arrival of the spirit sparks a deep desire and longing for prophecy, serving as the very first and most basic level of divine inspiration.

The next stage of this journey involves joining a group of prophets. Connecting with this fellowship serves to elevate the new leader both spiritually and mentally [מלבי״ם]. Through this association, he actively engages in preparation and quiet reflection, eventually reaching the stage of complete prophecy itself [אברבנאל].

The ultimate purpose of this entire process is a complete change in identity. Commentators agree that this is a fundamental shift, as the individual had no prior experience with prophecy [מצודת דוד]. This change manifests in receiving an elevated spirit of prophecy alongside new ruling authority [רד״ק]. The personality transformation is total, encompassing his entire being, both body and soul [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, he is granted not only a wealth of prophetic vision but also new human traits, such as wisdom in counsel and bravery, which were never part of his character before [אברבנאל].
