I Samuel 13:5Sefaria

The immense buildup of the Philistine army and their preparation for battle created a severe and immediate threat for the Israelites. This danger stemmed from both the staggering number of enemy fighters and their strategic positioning [מלבי״ם]. The military force was of an enormous scale, boasting thirty thousand chariots. This massive figure may not refer strictly to the vehicles themselves, but rather to an entire military division, including chariots, that totaled thirty thousand men [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Mobilizing an army as vast as the sand on the seashore seems highly unusual when marching against a scattered, unarmed nation living under foreign rule. The true cause behind this massive deployment was the power of repentance. Following the Israelites' return to faith and the prayers of the prophet Samuel, God cast a deep terror upon the Philistines. Gripped by overwhelming anxiety, they felt compelled to gather an unprecedented military force [חומת אנך].

This overwhelming enemy gathering actually served two hidden purposes. First, it prevented the Philistines from later excusing their eventual defeat on a numerical disadvantage, proving to them that their vast worldly power was ultimately meaningless. Second, it taught the Israelites a profound lesson: when they return to God and remain devoted to Him, absolutely no earthly force can prevent His salvation [חומת אנך].

Beyond the sheer terror of their numbers, the Philistines posed a critical threat by penetrating the very heart of the Israelite defense. They established their camp just east of Beth Aven, in the city of Michmash. This location was particularly alarming because Michmash was designated to be the seat of King Saul. By claiming this territory, the Philistine army had marched directly to the doorstep of the royal city [מלבי״ם].
