Enemy forces moved freely across the land, spreading fear and destruction while the Israelite leadership remained completely powerless to halt their advance [מלבי״ם]. Emerging from the Philistine camp were elite, seasoned warriors. These men were heavily armed with swords and spears, highly trained for combat [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. They operated as dedicated strike units, tasked with a brutal mission to sabotage, loot, and bring ruin to both the people and the countryside [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד].

To maximize their devastation, the invading army divided into three distinct factions [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The first of these divisions directed its march toward Ophrah, targeting a region known as the land of Shual. While this was a specific geographic location [ביאור שטיינזלץ], ancient Aramaic translations identify this territory as the southern region of the land [רד״ק].
