The arrogant ambitions of a mighty ruler often meet a sudden and humiliating end. A king who dreams of ascending to the heavens and ruling the entire world ultimately faces a harsh reality that sharply contrasts with his grand plans [שד״ל, מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators highlights a profound double reversal of the king's desires. First, his dream of climbing upward, soaring above the stars, is entirely overturned as he is brought downward into the depths of the underworld. Second, his vision of expanding his empire to the distant edges of the earth is replaced by a far darker fate. He is cast down into the deepest, most remote corners [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] of a physical grave [רד״ק].

The resulting scene is one of absolute limitation. Rather than commanding a vast, limitless empire, the king finds his entire domain reduced to the bottom of a burial pit. His power and presence are completely confined to this tiny space, leaving him unable to expand his reach by even a single measure [מלבי״ם].
