The eradication is not limited merely to the immediate family of Nebuchadnezzar. Rather, it signifies the total uprooting of the entire Babylonian monarchy from the face of the earth [מלבי״ם].
The totality of this destruction unfolds in four distinct ways. First, the legacy of the king will be entirely erased, leaving nothing behind that bears his name or serves as a memorial to his reign [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Furthermore, his surviving kin will be cut off. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to blood relatives, with some specifying that it targets the father [אבן עזרא]. Conversely, others view this aspect more broadly as the elimination of any general remnant of the people [רש״י].
The eradication also extends deeply into the future of the dynasty, ensuring no descendants will survive. Most commentators agree that this doomed lineage includes both sons and grandsons. However, some suggest the destruction reaches even further down the family tree to grandsons and great-grandsons [מלבי״ם]. These are not ordinary children, but specific heirs of kings and noblemen positioned to inherit power. The decree guarantees that absolutely no one from the royal seed will remain to reclaim the throne or rebuild the ruins of Babylon [שד״ל]. Specifically, it ensures the elimination of any son poised to rule over his father's kingdom [רש״י].
