ישעיהו, פרק י״ד, פסוק י״ח

Isaiah 14:18Sefaria

כׇּל־מַלְכֵ֥י גוֹיִ֖ם כֻּלָּ֑ם שָׁכְב֥וּ בְכָב֖וֹד אִ֥ישׁ בְּבֵיתֽוֹ׃

Rulers of the world generally meet their end surrounded by dignity and peace. Even in death, these kings receive respect, largely because they do not leave behind a legacy of intense hatred and fierce resistance [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This final respect is demonstrated in two distinct ways. First, they are laid to rest through grand ceremonies that properly reflect their royal status [מלבי״ם]. Second, they are granted a designated, honorable location for their remains. The primary approach among commentators is that this location refers to a royal tomb or burial plot that the kings prepared for themselves during their lifetimes, serving as their eternal home.

There is, however, an alternative perspective suggesting that these rulers literally pass away in the comfort of their own palaces. According to this view, the kings die peacefully in their own beds before receiving a majestic burial. This tranquil passing and dignified interment stand in stark contrast to the fate of the tyrant addressed in the prophecy. He is defeated by his enemies, dies in disgrace, and is ultimately thrown from his grave in absolute humiliation [שד״ל].
