ישעיהו, פרק י״ד, פסוק כ״ח

Isaiah 14:28Sefaria

בִּשְׁנַת־מ֖וֹת הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אָחָ֑ז הָיָ֖ה הַמַּשָּׂ֥א הַזֶּֽה׃

A change of leadership in the kingdom of Judah marks a major political and historical turning point, sparking intense reactions from neighboring nations. Delivered during the sensitive transition of power, a harsh prophetic warning is directed at the Philistines to caution them about their future. This prophetic message, functioning as both a direct vision and a parable [אבן עזרא], arrives exactly in the year of King Ahaz's death, as his son Hezekiah prepares to take the throne [רש"י, רד"ק]. The warning may have even been issued just before Ahaz actually passed away [שד"ל].

The historical backdrop of this warning is rooted in the complicated, shifting relationship between Judah and the Philistines. The primary approach among commentators explains that during the reign of King Uzziah, the Philistines suffered crushing defeats. However, under his grandson Ahaz, the situation reversed. The Philistines rebelled, overpowered Judah, and caused significant destruction. Hearing of Ahaz's death, the Philistines celebrate, but the prophet warns them that their happiness is entirely premature. The incoming king, Hezekiah, is destined to strike them with even greater force than Uzziah did, effortlessly wiping them out [מלבי"ם, שד"ל, אברבנאל]. Although this prophecy occurs earlier in time than other recorded events of Hezekiah's life, it is positioned here to highlight his ultimate destiny of triumph over the Philistines [אברבנאל].

Offering a different perspective, another tradition suggests that it was actually Ahaz himself who severely defeated the Philistines. In this view, their overwhelming joy stems directly from the passing of the very king who had oppressed them. Consequently, the prophet steps in to warn them that their relief will be short-lived [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
