הַזָּלִ֤ים זָהָב֙ מִכִּ֔יס וְכֶ֖סֶף בַּקָּנֶ֣ה יִשְׁקֹ֑לוּ יִשְׂכְּר֤וּ צוֹרֵף֙ וְיַעֲשֵׂ֣הוּ אֵ֔ל יִסְגְּד֖וּ אַף־יִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃

The absurdity of idol worship reveals itself fully when human beings pour their finest wealth into creating a lifeless object, only to immediately turn around and worship it as a god. Driven by blind faith, people are willing to scatter their riches without limit. In their eagerness, they empty their pockets of gold. The primary approach among commentators is that they pour out their gold coins abundantly, letting them flow freely from their sacks like water [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא וביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests that because of their intense desire for the idol, they spend massive amounts of precious gold, treating it as if it were cheap and worthless [רד״ק, שד ל ואבן עזרא].

Next, silver is weighed on the beam of a balance scale [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רד ק וביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some note that the weighing instrument used is an imprecise tool, consisting of a hollow tube with a moving iron weight. This lack of precision shows that out of their deep devotion, they do not even bother to be exact with the weight of the silver, viewing it as insignificant compared to the idol they are making [שד״ל].

A clear division is offered regarding how these metals are used. The gold taken from the pocket is intended to pay the craftsman's wages, while the pieces of silver weighed on the scales serve as the raw material from which the statue itself will be formed [מלבי״ם]. Here lies a deep irony: a person hires a worker, provides the metal for the job, and then treats the resulting creation as a deity [מלבי״ם].

The ritual concludes with an escalation in worship. There is a fundamental difference between the physical acts of devotion performed. The initial act of bowing is a slight, lesser bend. Sometimes, this is not even directed at a deity, but is merely performed as a ritual or charm to bring good fortune. However, this escalates into full prostration, a complete kneeling that expresses total acceptance of the statue as a true god. The progression highlights that they do not merely bow to the object they manufactured; they go to the extreme of fully prostrating before it, believing with complete faith that it is a god [מצודת ציון, רד ק ומלבי״ם].
