God uses the vivid imagery of planting a vineyard to illustrate the tragic gap between the pure roots of the Israelites and their corrupt state. He expresses deep disappointment over their spiritual decline, contrasting a glorious past with a broken present reality.

The primary approach among commentators is that this agricultural metaphor reflects the lineage of the nation. The finest, most select vine—one that yields excellent, seedless grapes—represents a pure seed that never fails to produce a good harvest [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. It is an original planting, completely free from any foreign grafting [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. This perfect seed symbolizes the righteous ancestors: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Israelites were planted from this flawless family line, carrying the clear expectation that they would follow the path of their ancestors and produce equally good fruit [רש״י, מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה].

Instead of thriving, the branches became spoiled and wild, like the ruined offshoots that farmers typically cut off and throw away [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. The nation mixed with other peoples, losing their unique identity as a holy and separate group, and transformed into a wild, foreign plant of the forest that produces foul fruit [רש״י, רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, while a high-quality vine is carefully protected by fences, the Israelites broke through their protective boundaries. By abandoning the limits set by the Commandments, they turned into an unguarded, abandoned vine [אהבת יהונתן].

On a more personal level of character development, [אדרת אליהו] presents an additional layer of meaning. He explains that God planted excellent natural traits within every person, such as intellect, energy, passion, and desire. These abilities were meant to serve as a pure seed, dedicated to studying Torah and serving God. The tragedy lies in how people misuse these gifts. A person might apply their sharp mind and intense enthusiasm entirely toward material pursuits and business deals. Yet, when the time comes for prayer or study, they suddenly display laziness, fatigue, and a lack of understanding. By channeling their divine potential exclusively toward the physical world, they betray their purpose and turn their God-given strengths into a wild, foreign vine.
