People often remain fiercely loyal to their traditions and beliefs, even when those beliefs lack substance. The prophet highlights a profound absurdity in the behavior of the Israelites by drawing a sharp contrast between their actions and the steadfastness of other nations. A powerful logical argument unfolds: the nations of the world show absolute devotion to their false faiths, while the Israelites have forsaken undeniable divine truth for absolute emptiness.
This betrayal involves more than just a simple exchange of beliefs. It raises the question of whether any nation has ever completely replaced its own deity, or gone so far as to boast about and elevate the god of a foreign land [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. The sheer unreasonableness of the Israelites' actions is magnified through three distinct contrasts.
First, there is a stark difference in spiritual standing. Other nations, existing on a lower and more ordinary spiritual plane, remain firmly loyal to their traditions. In contrast, the Israelites, who occupy a unique and elevated spiritual level, have completely failed to uphold their sacred role [מלבי״ם]. The lesser nations keep their faith, while the spiritually elevated people betray theirs.
Second, the idol-worshipping nations cling tightly to their beliefs even though their idols are completely powerless and lack any real substance [מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה]. They refuse to abandon these false, helpless gods. The Israelites, on the other hand, have walked away from the true God.
Finally, the situation is framed as a matter of profound loss. True glory is found in a direct, devoted relationship with God [שטיינזלץ]. Out of deep reverence, this divine honor is spoken of indirectly to protect the dignity of God Himself [מצודת ציון, מנחת שי]. Yet, the Israelites traded this immense, genuine glory for useless idolatry that offers absolutely no benefit [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. While a person might sometimes sacrifice their honor for a practical, tangible advantage, abandoning the ultimate divine glory for something entirely worthless is an act of supreme and illogical foolishness [מלבי״ם].
