A harsh prophecy seals the absolute and final destiny of the exile. He is condemned to end his life in the land of his captivity, a strict ruling that fully came to pass in reality [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The scope of this punishment is total. The forced separation goes far beyond simply preventing him from returning to his former place in Jerusalem. Instead, it is a complete banishment from the entire region, denying him the right to ever return and settle in any city within the borders of the Land of Israel [מלבי״ם].
